What is a search engine?
A search engine is a tool which is designed to search for information across website indexed in the search engine directory. The information that could be searched is not only limited to plain text but also images, videos and other text. Search engine today is now capable of searching through various languages like Chinese, english and many more [...]. Also, most search engines today are not only limited to search on its own directory but they are capable of searching through other directories like dmoz.org as well social networking sites.
What are the search engines available in the market?
1. The most popular of all search engine is Google search engine which has indexed billion of websites all over the world wide web. According to the data from quantcast, an approximately 137.1 million visitors were recorded monthly and it ranks first in compete and quancast records. The approximate worth of google search engine is $1,204,500,000.00 according to cubestat but i think it has a greater value than that. It is so sad that google search engine only ranked second in alexa global traffic rankings.
2. Yahoo search engine is another leading search engine who competed with google all this years. Yahoo! Search Engine was originally a subject directory of sites. Yahoo! Search Engine can be accessed through general:www.yahoo.com, search:search.yahoo.com, directory:dir.yahoo.com. Ranks first in Alexa, Second in quantcast and nielsen brand rankings with 128mil monthly unique visitors and a recorded website worth by cubestat of $2,409,000,000.00.
3. Live search engine is a search engine created by microsoft corporation. Live search can be accessed in msn.com or live.com portal. Unfortunately, the search engine is behind 3 leading search engines on the internet but it can still compete well. Ranks fourth in Alexa, third in quantcast with 78mil monthly unique visitors and a recorded website worth by cubestat of $602,250,000.00.
4. Baidu is a leading chinese search engine that gives the 3 leading search engines above a hard time penetrating the chinese search engine market. It was established in 1999 by Robin Li and Eric Xu. The chinese ranks first in terms of volume of internet users thats why this company is still alive until today. Baidu ranks eleventh in Alexa, 1762 in quantcast and nielsen brand rankings with 500,000 monthly unique visitors and a recorded website worth by cubestat of $219,000,000.00.
5. Guruji is a new search engine whose developers are from india. India is another country that is part of top ten countries in terms of internet users. Guruji is sanskrit word for Guru. Even it was just released in 2006, it had earned a reputation. Guruji ranks 2,459 in Alexa global rankings, 11,989 in quantcast rankings with approximately 500,000 monthly unique visitors according to compete records and the website's worth is $979,668.03.
6. Cuil is the latest search engine released today which was developed by ex-Google engineers and ex-employees of IBM. 15. Naver is a search engine in South Korea. It is the first search engine made in Korea like Baidu of China and guruji of india. But due to the language used, it is only limited to people who reads korean (...hangul). 16. Alltheweb had just been acquired by Yahoo! and now uses the database of yahoo. You can either search in english or any language. 18. blogme.dium social search is using social media as the major place to search through. Founded in 2006 in Boulder Colorado. The search engine allows users and recognized in CNET's 2007 Webware 100. Along my list, this is the only search engine focused on social media group and communities all over the world wide web. Currently, blogme.dium ranks 54,775 in alexa global rankings with approximate 70,000 unique monthly visitors and a website worth of $43,981.77.
