Comparative advertising is a type of marketing strategy that promotes a certain product through comparison with its major competitors.
Famous advertisement using this advertising strategy includes Cola Wars (Pepsi and Coca-Cola) and telecom (Globe and Smart in the Philippines).
Due to the increase in the number of brands that use this kind of advertising, laws were formulated to stop brands from using the technique in the destruction of competitor's reputation.
Some of these laws includes Statement of Policy Regarding Comparative Advertising in August 13, 1979 and Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCP) in May 11, 2005.
Some organizations like INTA (International Trademark Association) requested a resolution to encourage all countries to permit comparative advertising.
There were also research about the effects of comparative advertising to consumers.
Researchers concluded that when a commercial talks about how better Product A than Product B, the consumers think that they are promoting product B (the competitor).
Researchers used a very deep mathematical theory to prove the effects of Comparative Advertising.
