In 1890, Dr. Oscar Troplowitz acquired a Hamburg, Germany-based company named Beiersdorf from founder Paul C. Beiersdorf. Both Prof. Paul Gerson Unna and Dr. Troplowitz developed in 1911 the 'Nivea Creme' which is based from Dr. Isaac Lifschutz invented product named Eucerit.
Nivea's first advertisement was released in 1912 with a tagline.. 'with the likeness of a lady' designed by Hans Rudi Erdt.

The product's name, Nivea, was derived from the Latin Adjective Niveus/Nivea/Nevium meaning Snow White.
